I nearly posted this in response to a STUPID post in a community but I decided to say it here instead so as to remove the likelihood of me going ASPLODE at the stupid smuggery and wilful ignorance.

I am so sick of this "well now we can manufacture sperm WE'LL NEVER NEED MEN AGAIN OMG" business and all that goes along with it. a) they haven't made sperm. They've made cells which are more like sperm than anything else they've made yet b) those people who can - ie most people - will still make babies the old-fashioned way because the majority of women like having sex with men, and will want to procreate with their men the way it's always been done.

WILL PEOPLE STOP BEING FUCKING RIDICULOUS. Saying "oh now the feminists will be happy because WE DON'T NEED MEN ANY MORE" is wrong in so many ways. Suggesting that the ability to create sperm without the presence of a man (which isn't possible yet no matter what the news is yelling) means women aren't going to bother with men any more is kind of like saying that the existence of nicely-shaped prosthetic legs is going to make people who don't like the shape of their perfectly-functioning legs cut them off and replace them.

ARGH STUPID PEOPLE GET OFF MY INTERNETS.

Speaking of my internets, it's unlikely I'll be able to get online until Monday because the Oxegen festival is happening across the road from me and ninety squillion people going HI I'M AT THE BEER TENT! NO, BEER TENT! will be using all the wotsit that we rely on for our dodgy mobile-modem connection.

As always, you are far too right.

Feminists in liking men shocker! If it wasn't for men, who would I have sex with? Sorry, no generic advance will ever turn me (even if I wanted kids!).

And, you know, I fancy women too but I am with a man and if we could use his sperm to have a baby we would, no matter what schmancy technowiffery existed. I MUST BE AN AWFUL FEMINIST.

Sorry, I'm going to have to ask you to return your Feminist secret handshake & toaster.

BTW, I love the analogy about legs.

Damn. I dismantled the toaster for Sekrit Queer Agenda experiments.

I'm glad you like the analogy! I was worried it was too clunky but it was the best one I could think of without spending ages pondering.

YES YES AND DOUBLE YES! I was trying to find a good simile for this, and you hit the nail on the head!!!

(Sorry about the other night and not being able to chat and not being able to get on the phone and all, but poor Andrew was in bed near tears because of our fight. I had to get up and talk to the poor guy. This thing with his mother/wedding and all is wearing on him quite a bit. Though I did tell him what you said to tell him about the wedding plans and all, and he's like, "Oh, so you're telling everyone of our problems?!" I'm like, "Dude, if I didn't, I'd be going even more apeshit on your ass than I am now, so be grateful I have friends to bitch to about this." He agreed, lol.)

Huzzah! I am glad my legs comparison works - it sort of seemed like the most obvious one to me given my legs (and the fact that I would never even consider having them cut off and replaced with pretty prosthetics).

(That's totally ok, I understand - wedding planning is hard on a lot of couples and when mother-in-law drama is thrown in, it's even more traumatic. Good response to him, though, not sure I would have thought of that myself!)

Thanks, hon, for understanding. I cannot WAIT for this thing to be over and done with. Even though I love summer and this wedding is at the end of it... I just want it to be over. :\

And yes, I loved that comparison, and I definitely agree with you!

Oh I totally hear you. I never wanted a wedding in the first place - just wanted to bugger off somewhere and have a tiny tiny ceremony and then come back and have an informal party at some point - and I remember very well the feeling of "oh god can this just be DONE WITH NOW PLEASE I'M ABOUT TO KILL EVERYONE".

Remember: being married is way better than getting married.

You are wiser than I am. I've spent all my Sanity Watchers points for the day on reading Really Annoying Stuff.

There's enough sperm frozen globally that men have been redundant from a purely reproductive perspective for quite some time. Funny how they're still around though? :)

Date: 2009-07-09 06:10 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] redshira.livejournal.com
Well exactly. Also, do people not realise how much time and effort and faff and money it costs to get sperm which isn't your own/your partner's, let alone futuristic labsperm? Men: do not worry.

From: [identity profile] miss-soap.livejournal.com
They're not even real sperm; they just have sperm-like qualities.

Bad reporting ftw.

Date: 2009-07-09 06:13 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] redshira.livejournal.com
Exactly! There was a doctor on the radio yesterday having a restrained rant about the media misreporting it, which I was very pleased to hear since usually these things go unchallenged.

Is it just me or is there always a boatload of faff and nonsense all around when things like this get reported?

(9 times out of 10 they're MIS-reported too....bother it all!)

I read that as a boatload of spaff. That is all.

Science + Media = opposite of science. What do you mean, journalistic integrity? What a quaint notion.

Kind of hard to do that when the entire point of the news is to bring people in so that more of them can see your advertisements.

You are spot on. The headlines are VERY misleading and I am sure not many people are bothering to actually read the article(s). I admit my heart did a flip-flop seeing "HOPE FOR INFERTILE MEN" on the newsfeed.... which quickly faded when I saw it was "ooh, look what we possibly might have maybe done with stem cells and oh hai, they were abnormal sperm".

I thought of you when I heard the doctor on the radio getting annoyed at the misreporting. A lot of people are being really flippant about all this but for some of us it could have had real significance.

Feminists like men?
I thought men were invented because vibrators can't buy us drinks?

Seriously - it's amazing who they give a computer to these days. At least you need a license to drive. Then again....

Oh, thanks for that! I agree with all your comments and replies. Reporting sucks, which is why I dont read newspapers (sorry ..badly written, sensation seeking, opinionators) these days. I dont watch it on the t.v. either. I am constantly surprised by what is going on in the world when my friends inform me!!!
The stupidity of the whole thing gave me a good laugh tho - and yes I like your legs analogy as well. I was trying to think of one about eyes and glasses but it didnt quite work.
Sorry I missed you when you made it across the Irish sea recently and nice to see you back here again. Am away for the weekend so wont miss any posts. Hope you have fun with all the beer swillers across the road!!
